Auto trans won't shift into PARK

As a RWD Volvo junkie, this board has been invaluable to me over the years, but I need help on a problem new to me.

Recently bought a 93 940 automatic with 106,000 miles showing on the clock.

The car will not shift into PARK, so I keep it in Neutral with the parking brake applied.

I removed the console cover and fiddled with the little plastic links which form a type of yoke at the front of the shifter without success.

My youngest is returning from the Gulf in a month or two, and I would like to have this ready for him when he arrives, in part to combat his new car fever.

Suggestions?
