Bench testing the starter 200

I wanted to know how can I bench test the starter. I read archives though there is some confusion.
There are two parts (bypassing the solonoid)
One post states one should short between the +ve terminal where the HD battrey lead connects to terminal where the heavy braided wire connects . Can I connect battrey +ve directy to terminal where braided wire connects .

Can one replace the solonoid separately if it is culprit.
I also wanted to know if the solonoid is only sticking then is it worth cleaning it or it is too worn out now.

(Bypassing the Starting key )
2nd confusion is it also says to connect a separate lead from battrey +ve to where yellow /blue wire connects . Can not I short this termial to the main terminal where battrey +ve connects . This is what I tried and results were -ve.

I have already ordered a rebuilt bosch which has yet to arrive but wanted to confirm.
