Please help--- 240 Odometer wiring question 200 1991

I have a 1991 244 and the speedometer quit. I took it out and the infamous little gear was in tact.

There was a male wire that was attached to a male terminal on the board near the odometer by using a chunk of hose??? (And the ones at the junkyard had the same arrangement??? What is that about???

Anyway, I switched that connector to a female, threw away the chunk of hose and got a cluster that for sure works installed but I am not getting any action on my new odometer??? Can someone tell me what that wire does? The wires color in my car is red and white but is NOT the red and white wire that would go to a tach.(that already had a female connector on it.) The color of my cousins car is yellow. But at any rate it is the only wire that accompanies that little cluster that goes into the odometer.

Thx in advance for the help.
(I hope that what I described above is coherent. : )
