Brake caliper retaining pin clips 200

I changed the rotors and brake pads today for the first time. The (2) pins that hold the pads to the caliper have a retaining clip that slip into the hole in the pin. I couldn't get the clips back in as there isn't much distance between the back of the brake pad and the inner face of the caliper.

Is there a trick to get them back into the holes? I can't even see the holes!

Are the clips necessary or will the pins eventually work there way out.

Thanks in advance
