You're right Steve. If the regulator/brush assembly is the same Bosch EL style I find in all the 240s, the brushes could be removed and you'd still get the lamp test function for the BATT light.

Now, I mean the brushes removed, not the brush assembly, because the Bosch brand have a 68 ohm resistor between alternator case and D+ terminal providing that lamp test ground not always included with the aftermarket copies.
