back up/reverse lights check engine light 200 1989

Art's right... The Black wire is the ground.
But to carry things further along in finding this wire and what it needs to connect to...
Remove the Shifter Cover (two screws at front)
Reach to the forward right portion of the "bucket" the shifter sits in.
You should feel a triangular plastic unit with 4 wires soldered into its passenger side face.
Blue & Yel/Blue work with the Parking Relay
Black & Yellow are the Reverse Lights (switch)

Turn car on and Set parking brake and shift to reverse.

Check for continuity with Blk & Yel THEN check for the same continuity with a either exposed contact in the LEFT reverse light.
