non-volvo question

Usually I'd only post about volvos but my volvos have been running beautifully the last few years. My 1993 BMW 325i on the other hand...

My mechanic tells me that it needs a new transmission but I'm worried he's just trying to rip me off; I was thinking it just needed a new clutch. I've never heard of a manual transmission being broken... Am I right to be very suspicious?

Symptoms: Almost impossible to put in gear, once in gear it goes without slipping though, horrible grinding noises when putting in gear.
