How to remove headliner on 1993 or 1984 240 wagon (for tailgate harness repair)? 200 1993

This is my try to replace/repair tailgate harnesses. Thanks to rstarkie for providing a detailed method to repair it without buying a new harness.

In it he said "Simply grasp the headliner at the corner, pull back and down and it begins to come loose."

I just tried that on both my 1984 and 1993 240 wagons, and although I'm no Arnold Schwartzeneger, it seems like there's a hard metal (plastic?) rim that is stuck tight to the roof. I tried to gingerly pry the headliner loose using a screwdriver (hoping that it would have clips like the tailgate inner panel), but it just started to bend the rim of the headliner and showed no signed of coming loose. I don't see anywhere that I can grasp to pull it....just enough room to get my fingernails under the edge of the vinyl, and of course, I can't grasp the smooth vinyl itself.

Anyone have any experience with this?
