Electric/Engine Kills 200 1989

Not sure how to continue tracking this problem, please help. Car starts, drives normal then eventually the engine starts to hem and haw, it revs up and then down
until after a few minutes of this it will die. This happens with even touching the gas and giving it more gas doesn't alter the behavior, even while driving it.

Started it up a the next day, it drove normal until I flicked on the headlights (turning the headlights on and off was definitely correlated in this last instance) and then it started to rev up and down again until it eventually quit.

Any ideas as to the possible culprit?
