B23E - Intermittently dieing on highway - ignition problem? 200 1981

'81 242 GLT, B23E/M46.

Only owned the car for 7/8 months but for as long as I can remember, when traveling on the highway I could swear I felt mili-second flat spots in the revs... the best way to describe it is like going over a bump with shot engine mounts; it feels as if your engine misses for a fraction of a second. But that's the history!

Tonight when driving home these mili-second flat spots were a lot more frequent... I started getting suspicious when I could physically see the rev counter bounce down a few hundred RPM really quickly. Eventually, a big one... the rev counter dropped to zero and there were just no revs. The car was running, everything in the cabin was working, but there was just no engine response and the car started slowing down. A few seconds later, back to normal; rpm's corrected and I was on my way again, until it died 5/10 seconds later. Every 5-10 seconds (approx.) it continued to die for several seconds until I finally slowed down on an exit ramp.

It drove fine 'around town' in the lower speeds. I took the back roads home and when I reached 60kmph I could feel those flat spots again, before it died again around 70/80kmph. I slowed down, took it easy the rest of the way home and didn't have any other problems. As if this one isn't annoying enough!

There's about 340k KMs on the engine, no history and to be honest, it could do with some work. I don't really want to throw any money at it, but if there's any simple troubleshooting/checks I can do to at least get me a few more days out of it, that would be handy. A few people are throwing thoughts of an ignition problem my way, what do you think?

Thanks in advance for the help...
