Update to mysterious 940 failure 900

I finished putting my car back together today. I spent about five hours removing and replacing the transmission, including replacing the rear main seal. The original post can be seen here.


The picture below shows the inside of the transmission bell housing. The scrape is pretty obvious.



The flex plate has two pins on the front side which are for a dealer only Volvo timing tool. See below, and you'll notice one the the pins is bent towards the outside of the flex plate. This is the first replacement flex plate I got out of the spare parts pile. The second flex plate I got looked fine.



The picture below shows the poor riveting job on the loose pin.



The next picture shows the flex plate I removed from the car. Both pins are missing. I think one of the pins came out and got mixed up with the tone ring by getting wedged between it and the inside of the bell housing.



I would have removed the pins from the flex plate I used, but that would slightly affect the balancing, and they were securely riveted in. This is a pretty uncommon failure.
