Our 1991 240 will hit 200k this weekend (fingers crossed), and it runs like a dream (okay, I need to do something about the OD), and I always thought I would keep it forever. But due to job issues, I will be relocating from the US to Ireland, and I might have to let it go. I was trying to convince myself that it's feasible to take it over the pond, but there are just too many cons.
Shipping alone would be 1000+, it would need all sorts of changes for registration (headlights etc.), and it has the steering wheel on the wrong side. With the auto-box fuel consumption is in the mid 20-ies. That's reasonable here, but hardly on the isle. Heavy tax penalties on big engines (and the 2.3 is considered a huge engine there) do not help. I don't really see a way out. Any thoughts?
Another question is what to replace it with. I feel like another brick is not a great option, for fuel and tax reasons. Ideally, it would be something small, with a small turbo engine. But nothing Swedish with RWD fits the bill. Sometimes I think classic saab 9-3, on crazy days even Alfa 155. V40?
Cars need to be 30yo to classify as classics and cheap tax. That would open up pre 1981 240s. With thirsty carburated engines... Sometimes I figure dropping a T4 in an 1980 240 would be sweet. Except for the 'dropping' part.
Do share your thoughts.
It's hard to part with the brick.
