940 wagon squeak from engine area 900 1995

I have a 1995 940 turbo wagon, 175K miles, well maintained. There is a very annoying short squeak coming from under the hood. Lasts less than 1 second. Can happen as often as every 30 seconds, or as little as every 5 min. Seems to happen most during a change of engine speed, such as right after the trans shifts. I have checked the belts, the seem tight. I suspect the water pump, but it is not leaking. However, when I grab the water pump pulley, there is a slight amount of play in the shaft. Happens weather A/C is on or off. How can I locate and correct this problem, and make sure it is not going to lead to something damaging to the engine? Engine mounts look ok.
