seat surgery 200 1990

Well, I have my front seats completely dismantled and am amazed. The wiring grid for the seat heater is something to see. The wires are kind of bunched up together and have a nylon-filament tape over them....kind of. The bottom foam is literally broken at the seam and the front 1/2 is just hanging on. Are there supposed to be two sections of the foam? There is an "insert' at the front top of the cushion. Three questions: Has anyone ever bought a big, nice block of foam and just sculpted it to match the original? And: The wires on the heating grid are laced on one side with good string to keep them aligned but the other side was not and why wouldn't I want to do the other side before it reinstall it? Are there any other smart things I should do while it is disassembled?
