Folks,
I have a 1990 245 DL in need of the usual front suspension rebuild we all love.
What visual cues verify whether the struts tubes on the signal red wee beastie are ABS or not ABS struts?
I used the brickboard "search" function and I cannot find such information.
I'd like to install Bilstein HDs on the 1990 245 all around. Keep the factory HD springs the beast came with and add some 1985 244 turbo stabilizer bars I have. The springs are about as large in diameter front and rear as I'd ever encountered on a 240.
As we all know, Bilstein HDs do NOT fit into Volvo 240 ABS struts whether or not the vehicle comes ABS equipped.
In June of 2000, I bought Bilstein HDs strut cartridge dampeners for my grey market 1991 240 saloon (sedan). It came from Germany, originally. Not Bilstein, brickbaord of the time, nor any other outlet made mention, in June of 2000, that you can't use Bilstein HDs in ABS struts. Yet this was an issue some ten years prior.
So, I chose to replace the ABS struts on the 1991 240 sedan with the slightly earlier model with great frusteration. I should have gone with Koni at that time as was my original intent.
But everyone on brickboard is krazy (glue) about billeis! billys! billies! (billees?)
Considering the difficulty, I wish I had gone with the high performance adjustable Konis as I had in my 1979 242 GT (Holland grey market import).
Yet Konis, the high performance adjustable ones, and they'll fit into ABS struts tubes, are well over 600$ US a set of four last I checked.
Thanks, folks!
cheers,
Volvo "Buttermilk" MacDuff
