240 not charging battery, many lights, ful story. 200

Hi Everybody,

Thanks for all the great info and help. The schematic of the electrical system is great.

This is a college car for my son. He got stuck coming home with a buddy of his in the parking lot of a Dunkin' Donuts. The same Dunkin' Donuts he locked himself and his girlfriend out of the car two weeks ago.

Fortunately, his friend had triple A and they were able to get a tow for the 60 miles home. While they were waiting for the flatbed, a guy pulled into the parking lot to get some coffee, asked what there problem was and started lecturing them how easy it was to change an alternator in a 240 and that they should just run down to the Pep Boys down the street, buy one and install it right there in the parking lot. Shaking his head he went to leave in his car and it wouldn't start. He had a dead battery too. I told my son to avoid that Dunkin' Donuts. It's cursed.

It was interesting seeing my car fly past the center of the picture window while I was watching TV waiting for them. I thought it would come home behind a conventional tow truck rather than a flatbed. Charged the battery for a couple hours enough to start it and get in my garage.

After doing the voltage measurements and getting the pointers from all of you, I got to work.

I had a spare alternator from my parts car. Changed it out with the failed one and got my son back on the road. I'm thinking of getting a regulator for the one I removed. If that fixes it, I'll have a spare again.

I replaced the battery last week when he was home. The battery came with the '90 5 years ago and appeared to have a shorted cell. (10.5 volts and still pulling 8 amps after 8 hours on the charger)

It wasn't until the second failure this week that he mentioned all the dash lights coming on periodically and that this had been happening "forever".

Thanks again for your help. I'll have to keep an eye on my '93 now.

Mark
