Ignition Question 444-544 1959

Got it. Yeah, I tried and failed to get a Pertronics into my dist before I settled on the Crane. The Crane system is pretty darn universal; it's an optical system with a soft nylon shutter that pushes on over the rotor shaft, so only requires a rotor shaft of roughly the right diameter, and the optical unit that can be screwed down where the points were... I would be surprised if no such system were available for the B16 as it really isn't particularly specialized for any given car. It would be a snap to manufacture the shutters in a variety of diameters, for example, and adapting the optical unit for different points styles can't be so incredibly difficult... surely someone has done this.

And yes, taking the current out of the points would likely make them last much, much longer. Not forever, but probably years between tinkerings. (Just a guess off the top of my head.)

Anyway, set your points the usual way. You might even want to set the dwell using the old system to make sure you've got reasonable points adjustment. Then swap to your system and set timing the normal way, using a strobe light. (Electronic ignition doesn't do well with static timing adjustment)

Don't get me wrong, I do believe that this system will be a whole lot better than running strictly points and condenser like it was 1938 or something. Bravo for making the change. I was just shocked to see that such a system existed :-O

Good luck with it!
