Thanks much Art, exactly what I wanted to know.

I think this suggests an answer to my speedo questions in an earlier thread. Briefly: I've now tried 4 different speedometers in a 91 ABS sedan w/ a K10042. All have good gears; all look OK; speedo works on 3. I reflowed the solder connections on 2 of them.

It's possible that the chip is fried on 3 (on one it is for sure) via this scenario: odo quits; owner reads and learns about failed gear; gets a replacement gear and installs; attaches the red-white wire to the double-spade .... and ends up with a working speedo but still a non-working odo.

This could be wrong though. Two of the cars have high idles but none have your "idle craziness".

The 4th speedo I tried was a K40168 from a 1992. Nothing. I found an old thread where you explained that - link below. Thanks again.

Next step is to try an old cluster from an 87 - no service/ abs/ srs lights. If that works I'll swap speedo heads and live without the service warning.

(it's not letting me post the link)
