Bad O2 Sensor? 900

1993 960 133K Calif.

Check Engine Light on, code 2-1-2 which means HO2 sensor signal bad or missing.

When I clear the code, (the car drives well both with and without CEL) it takes a while before the CEL comes back on. Not sure how many miles since my wife has mainly driven this car.

I pulled the black rubber "bullet" that covers the spade connection on the Green - Black wire as described in FAQ and put the digi voltmeter on it after warmed up.
I get a solid reading of 0.79 Volt, no fluctuations in voltage up and down.

Is the O2 sensor likely bad? It would indicate the car runs rich I believe.

I need to SMOG the car, would it likely fail California SMOG even if the CEL has not come back on at the time of SMOG test? I know it will fail if the CEL is on.

I found a $20 universal O2 sensor that has 4 wires and is supposed to fit my car, but my shop manual shows 3 wires, anyone tried this route and if so is the 4th wire just an extra ground that you leave unconnected?
