Tune Up wisdom sought 140-160

All,
I'm planning to replace points, rotor, cap (already did plugs) this weekend and re-time the engine. Any tips? Should I just follow the specs in the Haynes manual, or does experience show the timing specs and point gap should be altered?

I heard from someone the Haynes point gap is too close and causes burned points.

Madhu
