Ajusting Trans Kickdown Cable 700

"There was also a rubber boot over the cable (to prevent dirt/liquid ingress) that because of a crimp-on ferrule, prevented the cable from fully retracting into the sheath. I popped it loose to make the cable free-enough to see how it shifts.

If by "it" you mean the ferrule, popping it loose was a mistake. The ferrule is meant to be the reference for a properly adjusted cable (about 1mm of cable showing behind the ferrule).

But as you now know, the cable can be adjusted by trial and error. To fine-tune the adjustment I would go by counting the "flats" (±) on the adjuster hex, avoiding the need for the ferrule now that it's gone.
