whining trans 900

I have 1995 940 with 100000K miles. I flush the trans every few years. Today the temperature was 44 degrees in the morning at at about 1600 RPM the trans made a whirling sound and it lasted for my 3 mile trip - at about 25 mph. It is a whirling sound. any ideas. It has done this for two mornings. Ideas? Thanks.
