possible engine swaps? 4cyl 1800

Neither of the engines you mention is anything near "bolt in". I'm almost certain the B21/23 turbo motor from a 240 won't fit unless you stand it upright, which will require a special bellhousing. Turbo Pinto motor? Yuck!

The obvious solution here, if you want to keep it all Volvo, is to adapt the XC90 V8. I'll leave the details to you. :)

PS - Either your speedo is slow, or your tach is fast, or some combination of the two... 4300 rpm in a stock ES should be very close to 90 mph.
