Speedometer issue 700 1991

Hey all,

I think I'm having the problem with the speedometer in my '91 740 (NA). As you may know, this is a car I've owned, loved and faithfully maintained for the last two years, having purchased it from the original owner. It currently has 166k miles and still runs like a champ.

The speedometer is a different story, though - I noticed the issue while driving home from dinner tonight. Between 0 and 45 mph, the speedo works just fine. However, something strange happens when accelerating up to highway speeds - I notice that while the car keeps going faster, the speedo needle goes up to just 45 mph and stays at 45 mph. I can still accelerate to 60 and beyond but that stupid speedo needle stays at 45. The odometer and trip odometer function normally. Is this an electrical issue or is it the speedo cable? It is annoying the heck out of me and I want to fix it soon.

Note - I have had issues with the speedo since I bought it - it works fine most of the time, but a lot of times, both speedo and odometer just stop working and will not work for a number of weeks. Then they both start functioning again all by themselves. The speedo staying at 45 mph even at highway speeds is definitely bugging me though.
