Have you driven and first gen Miata (NA)? Very much in the spirit of 75 % of what you speak. Lowish horsespower (115 horsepower'ish more with the 1.8 but not much), tight but accommodating cockpit, manual top, relatively skinny tires. They do require much less maintenance.

they truly targeted the MG/Triumph/Lotus/etc but made it not leak (fluids or rain).

So of the other cars I did mention are more complex but not exceptionally so.
