Good for you man!

Now you are making sense that there is something there to make it work.

Yes this proves the alternator is working.

Now don't expect it to keep running if and when you take the battery out of the car.
The reason is it takes a wee bit of current from the battery to get it "excited" to work!

Now with that explained, to the minimum, some alternator's may run on a self feed system. Once it is revved up and kept up above any external current load that might siphon away it will put out a charge.

There are such things as one wire alternator's but Volvo does not use them.
It might be exclusive to Delco as that is the only company that I have seen designed after.
I express the disclaimer, "I have seen."
I just don't want to have you going around all cocky while saying, it ain't so!
