Front end "shimmy' 700 1991

Occasionally while driving the car it will develop a shimmy. It starts as just a bit of oscillation but seems to amplify itself until the steering wheel is soon quickly jumping back and forth in my hands. The longer this is allowed to continue the more violent the movement becomes.

Stopping the car and then proceeding eliminates the problem- sometimes for days, until the next time it occurs. This is not set off by hitting a pothole and varying road surfaces do not seem to be a factor.

I need to get the car inside (it will have to wait in line at this point) and check this out. I always seem to have a difficult time diagnosing worn front end components.

What should I be looking for and how do I find it?

Thanks, Randy
