Howdy all, long time, no post...
I've just become the proud owner of a 1980 242GT with really high miles in semi-bad shape. Yeehah. Once you've read the *features* of this car, you'll realize that ALL 79's are overrated and pale in comparison to this car's raw stance and ballzy approach to life. (Also, it's destined to become a ClubRally car, so no biggie -- everything is going to be replaced anyway). Just wondering about a few things:
1) The driver's seat is destroyed (no grid, no original foam, wondering if the frame is good). Should I replace the phone book that is in there between the floor boards and the cheapo aftermarket foam with an OEM phonebook or an aftermarket phone book? The Bosch phone books are so expensive, and I can't find the right part number (anybody have it? -- Foster, Bowers, or Abe -- help?) I hear IPD has a great white pages version on sale right now, but am thinking that perhaps the yellow pages would give me a stiffer ride and be a better complement to the GT suspension.
2) Tire matching: It's got four beautiful 5 spoke turbo rims, but the highlight is really the tires. I believe the previous owner felt that true performance came from variation, and was probably still in the 'testing and break-in' phase. Of four tires, two match in manufacturer, size, and tread. Even the spare is different (no rim -- just a tire in the trunk). Is this bad or does variety provide the spice of life? Perhaps I will rotate them on a weekly basis until I decide what I like where.
3) Front grille replacement... No grille and 242GT grilles are about as obtainable as the holy grail. Considering the car, what is more appropriate? Window screening material or chicken wire? (Painted shiny, cheesy black, of course!)
4) Emblems: There are no decals on it right now, (was repainted once -- poorly), but I am thinking that this beauty needs at least one giant NO FEAR! sticker on it. Maybe two. What do you think?! I hear Earl Scheib has a special going -- primo paint job (includes masking!) for $219.
5) Rust: As this is a Cal car, there is no rust (especially around the rear fenders). Where can I get some? Can some of you Mid-West guys send me some? The car doesn't feel complete without a few patches here and there...
Let me know!
DISCLAIMER: In all seriousness, this is a decent project car and I didn't pay very much for it, so no biggie. Besides, 'Uncle' Skip and 'Uncle' George have gotten the rally bug under my skin and I just couldn't pass this up. Heck, it made California smog, so it can't be TOO BAD!!!
