Downshifting with Auto Tranny 200 86

As a manual transmission driver, I felt the automatic out of control until I began to use the gearbox the way I would had I been in a manual car; downshifting before using the brakes, lowering the gear when descending deep drops etc. . . The question is, are these transmissions capable of this proactive driving style? I felt that I sensed the transmission a little bit clunky lately and on a few cold starts, it seemed to hesitate before finally kicking in (to a lower gear?). Any thoughts would be helpful!
