Replaced battery, still dead (240) ALL 1990

Posted earlier in the week, thanks to all who gave advice. To retell the story, car was starting fine until hottest day of the year, but after short supermarket trip, it only clicked 5 or 6 times and nothing. Radio and all lights would come on fine. Went back a few days later after the holiday and it occured to me to try jumping it and, voila, she ran. As soon as I turned the car of and tried to restart, same problem. Went and had battery checked, and it tested bad. Bought a new battery, installed, started and heard a much different type of clicking (much louder), and smoke started coming from the new battery! Radio and lights are working, though. I guess its a bad cable causing a short? I really don't know much about Volvo's or cars made after 1975, for that matter. Please tell my it's not my starter....Thanks in Advance
