Alternatively, if you don't mind a bit of discomfort it is very well possible to do this job with the dash in place. Remove the glove compartment, under dash panels, center console side panels and then start digging your way in. With a bit of work and care you can eventually undo the clips that hold the side covers in place, and remove the motor. Be aware that to be able to use modern (fully enclosed) motors in place of the old open cage motor a bit of work with a dremel tool will be required.

I did this twice on a '74 164E (first motor broke after 7 months).
