Reverse Lights and 3rd brake light dont work 200 1987

I have '87 wagon 5-speed, and the 3rd brake light and reverse lights are broken.

Here is the situation. A few months back my 3rd brake light was hanging, it worked though and I didnt have time to fix it. So I removed it. Shortly thereafter I noticed that the reverse lights were not coming on. (I cant say for sure which came first); I though maybe removing the brake light had caused sort of problem, so I put the third brake light back on, Now it doesnt work and the reverse lights are still broken.

I know its not a fuse, are these lights tied together in some other way. Could these problems be totally independent? All other taillights work great.

Help appreciated.
