Hey fellow Bricksters,
I just started a 6500 mile roadtrip from Denver to the East coast with my fiance to see friends and family. I have an '85 760 Turbo 5-speed with 221k on her. I know it's a pretty bold move taking a car that old from Denver to Florida to Vermont. But she runs too damn good not to.
I noticed going across Kansas (what a boring state) and I noticed that if I mashed the accelerator at 70 mph and the boost was nearly in the red (I turned the boost up a bit :) the clutch seemed to slip. Only about 500-750 RPM worth. So if it was spinning 3,000 at 70mph, it would slip only to about 3500 rpm. I assume this is the clutch and now I'm a bit worried because I have so far to drive yet. It does this in 5th gear and even in 4th gear at this speed. But accelerating from still all the lower gears are fine, with no perceivable slipping. I even put the bumper up to a telephone pole and couldn't get it to slip in 1st or second gear. It just stalled the engine even though I was trying pretty damn hard to make it slip. I'm sure I looked rather stupid purposely trying to push this pole over!
So my question to you most intelligent Bricksters is, (a.) do you think this is an early clutch failure syndrome, and (b.) how hard is it to replace a clutch if it is this?? I called my trusty mechanic in Denver and they said it takes them about 4-5 hours, and is NOT an easy job. It sounds nearly out of my realm. Is this something a shadetree mechanic with a good assortment of tools, including pneumatic, can do? With labor and parts I'm looking at about $700. I will trade the car in before I dump this into her. That is of course I can get through this 4 week 6500 mile trip (98% highway).
Thanks for any and all of your help,
Mark
RIP George
