Oil warning lights? Do they even work? 700 1988

I am really starting to doubt that little red light with the oil can that lights upon startup. Is it there to warn of too little oil? If it is what actuates it? I was wondering because it has not worked for me when i needed it most. Last spring on the way to school my oil drain plug fell out and I just happened to notice blue smoke coming out of the back of my car. Didn't go on that time. Then just two weeks ago I checked the oil in my moms newly acquired 745ti and the oil didn't show up on the dipstick. The light wasn't on that time either. Just checking because I know that her car does leak some oil and if a light doesn't come on she will probably never know about it. Thanks for any insight.
