240DL wagon brake problem (?) 200 1986

The problem I had yesterday with my newly acquired 1986 240DL wagon is this: I was completely stopped at a red light with my foot on the brake when I noticed the brake suddenly and somewhat quickly moving toward what felt like the floor of the car. I've had the wagon just about a week, and this has only happened that one time. Am I just a (for now!) unknowing/incompetent driver of this magnificent piece of machinery, or could this be potentially dangerous?
