Think this might be the problem?

Interesting. I do mostly highway driving, a couple of long high speed treks into Pennsylania. Speed ... well, I own TWO Valentine-1s! So I'm hopeful that this crud has gotten burned off my valves....

Also interesting because my car uses absolutely no oil between changes. There have been a number of posts about excessive oil consumption in 850s, and one poster who I recall said he only buys used HIGH MILEAGE 850s - which may actually be the optimal thing to do if this hypothesis is correct!

Stilll there must a lot of short-haul, low mileage cars in reformulated gasoline areas. Why hasn't this problem been noticed or publicized? Typically cars are leased today, and by the time one reaches the 100,000 mile mark it may have had 3 owners (or lessees). If the head looks like your 740 or Tom's 960 the presumption may be that it was due to abuse on the part of one of the previous drivers.

I guess I'll buy as much of my gas as possible in Pennsylvania!
