Check Engine Light 900 1991

I was up in the mountains today to let the kids play in the snow. When I started my '91 945T up to come home the "Check Engine" light came on and stayed on. I turned the engine off and took a look under the hood, nothing unusual, oil and coolant levels fine. I started it up again, the light came on again and I drove home, about 75 miles. The car drove fine, no problems and no other warning lights came on, everything else normal.

What are the possible faults that would cause the light to come on, but not effect the drivability of the car. Thanks for your help!

Mike '91 945T and '93 245
