Front end clunking - replace shock mountings? 200 1979

There are many reasons for clunking, which include but are not limited to the following.
Suspension Bushings.
Ball Joints.
Sway Bar Bushings.
Loose crossmember bolts.
Motor Mounts.
and of course shock mounts.
The condition of all of these pieces can cause clunking as you describe, I know my 82 is doing it again, and I have bad ball joints and inner tie rods and missing and bad sway bar bushings, so mine makes all sorts of interesting noises, Check the condition of all your front end parts to be sure. I would think over time the bad shock mounts will eventually do irreversible damage to the towers themselves, but I'm not sure.
Good Luck,
Also try online sources for parts, you may be able to tackle it yourself andsave some money.
