You can't take an M46 out of an 81 240 DL without taking the engine out, can you?

The pin held in by the grub screw attaches the gear lever to the gearbox shift mechanism. The actual gearlever is held into the arm on the gearbox by a circlip. You need to remove both the pin (from underneath) and the circlip (from inside the car) to pull the gear lever. Once you get practised at it you can have the box sitting on the workbench in less than an hour.

Regards

Pete
