BW55 to AW71 conversion question 200 1978

Hi all,

I've been lurking here at the board for some time now, but never needed to post a question before (thanks to the abundance of existing info here).

My question is about the feasability of swapping an aw71 trany into a '78 242 DL. My bw55 finally bit the dust, and while my mechanic is willing to do the swap to an aw71, after lining up my car next to an aw71 equiped turbo, he doesn't see how the conversion would be physically possible. He is saying that the car's current shifter wouldn't line up at all with the aw71, and that the aw71 shifter would sit too far back. I mentioned that I thought the cross member could be relocated, solving these issues, but he seems to think that even then the shifter would need to be either heavily modified, or custom made.

Any advice about this would be greatly appreciated, especially if anyone has links to a page with step-by-step instructions deteiling what needs to change.

Thanks,

-- steve
