760 Front Suspension/Steering 700 1990

I'm about to replace all the front bushings, but have a few questions. There is slight but distinct play in both wheels when moved back & forth (hands at 3 & 9). The movement is also felt in the tie rods, and I'm concerned that I may have play in the steering rack (it's a ZF), rather than play in the inner tie rod end. The car has about 133K, and from the looks of the undercoating on the steering rack boots, it may all be original. So, is there a way to rule out (or in) the rack, before I start to rip and tear? If it does turn out (pardon the pun) to be the rack, are there any opinions as to new or rebuilt? Thanks!!
