screwy 740 tach 700 1991

I have a 91 740 with a haywire tachometer. The problem started abruptly and everything seems fine otherwise. With the engine running, I get a steady reading of about 3000 with the engine running at all throttle positions and with the igniton/engine off, it falls to the high side 7000 rpm mark. Any ideas of where to start looking would be much appreciated! Does one of the three wires to the coil pack feed to the tach? This car has the REX/Regina FI.

Many thanks
bruce
