Okay, my wife goes out after supper to the mall. I get a call later - the battery on the 95 Taurus is flat. Hop in the trusty stead (1990 745) and ride to the rescue. The battery is 7 years old and the alternator light never came on so I deduce it is the battery. So I disconnect the battery in the 745 because I don't want to fry any electronics, boost the Taurus. Job done. Hero takes a bow.
I should mention at this point that the 745 has an aftermarket alarm system that was in the car when I bought it. I rarely uses it because I'd have to carry around an extra fob to turn it on and off and it annoyingly locks the doors when you drive off. And who would want to steal a B234F?
Now, I was aware that the alarm goes off when you reconnect the battery. But it never crossed my mind while setting off to the rescue. Nor while I performed said rescue. But I did recall it in the middle of the parking lot when I reconnected the battery.
I couldn't turn it off without the fob. I didn't know where it was wired in either. So off I go in a dash across town to get back home and find the bloody fob. There are a lot more traffic lights than I remembered - all red, off course. And with my horn warbling and headlights flashing, people slowed down in front of me - but didn't pull over, mind you. People DID inch out into the intersections when the light turned green, looking for the emergency vehicle...Now I know what ambulance drivers must feel like....I'm behind you...WHOOP, WHOOP, FLASH, FLASH.. I'd call the drivers stupid were I not the one with the alarm system blasting away.
Amazingly, no one stopped me. Can someone tell me again what the point of the alarm system is when it is ignored?
The better half thought that this was very, very funny. Especially the bit about the freight train ambling through and blocking my 'short cut' home.
Anyway, there is a question in all this. I have no info on the alarm system. Any suggestions on the best place to put in a disable switch?
