Dramas on starting 140-160 1974

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. On the first few tries
with a cold engine does the starter turn the engine or not?
Or does it crank but not hit?

Have you checked the D-jet documentation online? There is a LOT
of good stuff there. It is http://www.icbm.org/erkson/ttt/engine/fuel_injection/d-jet.html

If it is cranking but not starting, I would check to make sure the
cold start valve is working and that your throttle position switch is
clean and adjusted right. Your auxiliary air valve could be stuck
shut also (however they usually stick OPEN.)
