1992 960 Tranny Fluid Change -why is teh procedure different ?

I saw the FAQ section on a tranny fluid change on a 960, but have a question about it:
Can the change be done the same way as on 740 (AW70) ? I see the return line at the same place as on AW70 - easy access. The change on 740 was a piece of cake and I am not sure why the procedure for 960 in the FAQ is different - will I do any harm to the tranny if I disconnect the return line at the tranny housing and drain the fluid there in 2Qt increments (as with AW70)?
Thanks.
