740 Turbo Overdrive 700 1988

Hi Guys,

Stumbled across this site and hope you may be able to help with my dilemma! I have an 88 740 Turbo Intercooler with the 4 speed (Overdrive) Manual transmission. 184000 miles on the clock.

It has started to go into overdrive on its own! Pressing the button on the gearstick does nothing (no light comes on dashboard) and once in it won't come out! This only happens when it gets hot, after 10-15 miles driving. Once cooled for 10 minutes it pops out of its own accord. I have tried changing the gearbox oil, no change, and have resorted to disconnecting the overdrive solenoid to see if it was an electrical problem......that didn;t help either!

So, my question is.......help! Any ideas what it may be? My dad and I thought it may be a clogged solenoid?

Your thoughts would be much appreciated, many thanks in advance. Apart from that, cracking car!
