speedo ratios 200 1983

The archives have some interesting comments on this thread, but don't address a problem I've encountered.

My 1982 24D has the stock differential that came with the car (was there more than one ratio available with this diesel?). I haven't yet looked for the numbers on the rear axle that apparently would give me that specific ratio.

It has the instrument cluster, engine and AW70 tranny from a 1983 245. The diesel had a .980 speedo, the 245 a .960.

My driven gear has a couple of stripped teeth and the speedo died (was working but reading slower than actual speed, of course). The driven gear has 19 teeth and my dealer tells me it's available in 17, 18, 19 and 20-tooth replacements for this tranny.

Can I correct the speedo inaccuracy by installing a 17 or 18-tooth driven gear? Or should I stick with the 19 and install a .960 speedometer in my cluster?

Thanks as always.

Phillip
