blew it 700 1991

Things were going too well. Changed the rear end fluid and moved to the transmission. After the ATF drained, inserted the pan bolt back in and no problem until it bottomed and would not snug up. Removed it and the bolt had all of one thread remaining, right on the end. Threads in the pan seem fine. Does anyone know the size of this bolt off the top[ of their head? It is not a #10 and is very close to 3/8. I ran a 3/8 in to check and it goes in fine but is slightly loose in the hole until it bottoms. SHould I just teflon tape a 3/8 bolt, put it in and keep on truckin of should I fix this "correctly"? Thanks in advance!

PS On the 740 rear end housing about half way up on the right side is a device with two (I think) wires going to it. I'm curious as to what it is.
