Automatic Transmission Selector Faulty 900 1993

The automatic transmission selector on my 1993 960 wagon with 65,xxx miles seems to be stuck in "winter" mode when the car is cold started. The lights on the transmission mode selector flash and the transmision is in a low gear setup. Ususally after turning the engine off and then back on the transmission goes into the "economy" mode to which it is set. But the lights on the transmision mode selector keep flashing. Fooling with the various transmission mode button selectors doesn't fix the problem.

How should this problem be analysed?

Best regards,

Dave
