744 won't start, mystery tachometer and the infamous black smoke... 700 1988

I have an 88 744T w/ 238k. The car has been a champ until now. Here's what happened. I had been driving the car like normal and then I stopped at home depot for a bit and when I came back out I noticed the car started hard and then when I tried to back out of my spot the car almost died and it didn't have any power. I was barely, barely able to limp the car back home. Then I came out two days later and the car fired right up. drove it for a bit and then the same thing as before, except now I just left the car instead of trying to get it home. My first premonition was a fuel filter as that would explain the inconsistency. Then I started thinking about the fuel pumps and relays. I don't know where to start and as I am a cheapskate college student, I don't want to replace anything I don't have to.

Also, the tachometer will read 1000 rpm's to fast at random and if I tap/bang on the dash the needle will go back down to where its supposed to be.
Any ideas? Loose ground?

Thirdly, While someone else was driving my car, I noticed while following black/grey smoke whenever the car accelerated. I assumed that the car has a ton of miles and the bear/cartridge is wearing out and letting oil bypass. Is this actually the case?
Thanks in advance for your replies. They help a lot.
